Multiple Domains

Main Menu

Multiple Domains. One of our most important features.

Just imagine the luxury of being able to hold all of your domains under one control panel without having to pay additional monthly fees. In many cases, a single individual can own as many as 10 domains for their personal use and such monthly fees for of all of these domains can simply be astronomical. That's why we have enabled this incredible feature to do the obvious: help reduce overhead costs and batch them all under one plan. Of course, one should never be too unassuming, which is namely the reason this page exists -- to help show you how everything works.

First of all, this feature does not cost you a dime as it is included with your overall hosting costs. Second, with each domain you add, you are still able to have the following functions with each domain:

  • Have Separate Email Addresses & FTP Accounts for new domain
  • Check Web-Mail for new domain
  • Manage MX Entries for each domain
  • Easily Manage Sub-Domains for each domain
  • Easily Check Web-Stats for each domain

To help explain logistics of how this works, we're going to use an illustration. Say your main domain is timber.com. And your "add-on" domain is lumber.com. Simple enough. It is important to understand that your add-on domain will rest within a folder in your main timber.com directory. For instance, these domains point to the following folders:

timber.com /home/timber/public_html/
lumber.com /home/timber/public_html/lumber/

It is apparent that the "lumber" folder is the folder used for lumber.com. What's even more incredible is that lumber.com can be accessed in one of the following ways: lumber.com ; lumber.timber.com ; or timber.com/lumber. And when users type in lumber.com, they will never see your timber.com parent site (lumber.com will act as its OWN site!).

Some advanced users may question how this works. Simple. Each add-on domain acts as it's own site and all DNS entries point to the folder as if it were another account at What's for supper Hosting.

Now... let's answer some obvious questions:

2) Do I have to pay anything for these domains? (no)
3) How do I add a domain to my account to work as it's own site?
4) What are the NameServers for my new domain(s)?

5) Can I have Email, FTP, Subdomains with my new domain(s)?
6) How do I access my new site(s) via my FTP account?
7) How many domains can I add? Is there a maximum?
8) Can I give these domains to my family or friends?

9) How do I view the web-stats for my new domain(s)?

10) What is the difference between an add-on & parked domain?

11) What is the difference between an add-on and a Reseller Account?

2) Do I have to pay anything for these domains?

Not one penny. This new service comes with our new What's for supper Hosting packages!

3) How do I add a domain to my main account?

You'll be surprised at how simple this process really is! First, you will obviously need to register your desired domain with a registrar. (We recommend GoDaddy.com) In this case, we will add the domain timber.com to addon. Once you have rights to that particular domain, you will then need to add that domain to your main What's for supper Hosting account (in this case, we will use whatsforsupper.net as the main account).

So to begin, you will need to login to your What's for supper Hosting account. Once inside your account, you will need to voyage to the DOMAINS menu and select "Manage Addon Domains" (as shown below)...

So far so good. Once you click on "Manage Addon Domains" you will be taken to a page similar to the following:

As shown above, I have entered our new addon domain, timber.com, into the NEW DOMAIN NAME field. To make things simple, the subdomain I have associated with this name is identical to the addon domain. I will then add a password "lumber" to this addon domain.

Once I have clicked on the ADD button, you may have to wait a few moments as What's for supper Hosting does its magic to create your account. Once completed, you should see something similar to the following:

This basically shows the "play by play" of your account setup. It is important to note to NOT use the Nameservers mentioned, but use the NameServers found within your master Activation Email (the email that you received when you once created your account).

And you have setup your addon domain! To complete this process, voyage back to your domain registrar and update the DNS settings to the same DNS/NameServers as your main account (again, as found within your Activation Email). Of course if you need any help with any of this, please don't hesitate to email us at support@whatsforsupper.net.

4) What are the NameServers for my new domain(s)?

It is very important that you use the same Name Servers as mentioned in your master Activation Email. Simply go to your domain registrar for your new "add-on" domain and select to use the same Name Servers as your current site is on. You will not experience any downtime by this addition. :-)

5) Can I have Email, FTP, Subdomains with my new domain(s)?

You sure can! And it can all be done from within your main control panel! To help illustrate, if you were to go in any of the mentioned areas, such as email, you will see something similar to the following (suppose you use the addon domain, timber.com):

After each item (email, FTP, subdomains, etc..) you should see a drop-down menu (similar to the above). Simply create your new email by entering all the fields and selecting CREATE. It's as simple as that. :-)

6) How do I access my new site(s) via my FTP account?

Excellent question. You may access ALL of your domains from the same login as your main login. With every add-on domain you create, you also create a 'sub-domain' for your site. Which means, if you created the domain lumber.com (as an add-on domain) to use the subdomain "lumber.yourdomain.com" then you would simply login to your FTP account, voyage into your main web folder (public_html) and find the folder assigned for your addon/sub-domain (which in this case is the folder "lumber"). This folder is your main web folder for your add-on domain and you may upload any files to it accordingly.

For example. Suppose you have created the following addon domains that point to the following sub-domain folders:

lumber.com -> lumber.yourdomain.com
maria.com -> maria.yourdomain.com
work.com -> work.yourdomain.com

To access maria.com, you would login to your main domain FTP account and voyage here:

/public_html/maria/

And all of your files will be located there! Of course, if you have any questions with this, please do not hesitate to email us at support@whatsforsupper.net.

7) How many domains can I add? Is there a maximum?

Our base plan can have up to 5 domains! Just as long as EVERY domain is for self-use only, as we do have sophisticated checks to insure this policy is followed.

Of course, if you would like to give a domain to a friend, please consider either offering them an account at What's for supper Hosting or obtaining a reseller account with us.

8) Can I give these domains to my family or friends?

Unfortunately not, however you may do so freely with our Reseller Accounts (here).

Every client should really have their very own account with us as this feature is a privilege for users with multiple accounts. We do have sophisticated checks to insure this policy is followed.

9) How do I view the web-stats for my new domain(s)?

Simple. Voyage to your What's for supper Hosting control panel and find the following icon:

Simply click on "SubDomain Stats" from within your DOMAINS menu (as shown above) and you will be taken to a new window. Scroll down until you see the "Webalizer" icon, followed by a list of sub-domains. Simply click on the sub-domain that represents your add-on and you will be taken to its very own STATS page.

NOTE: Please allow a good 24-48 hours for the STATS log to show for any account. The addon domain will obviously not show in this directory if the log does not exist.

10) What is the difference between an add-on & parked domain?

A Parked Domain is placing a domain on top of another domain, which in turn effectively points all HTTP and email traffic from the parked domain to the to the domain it is parked on top off. For instance, if your main account is abc.com and you park the domain, xyz.com, then each time a user types in xyz.com, they will automatically be taken to abc.com.

An addon domain basically allows for the use of a completely new domain. Click here for more information about add-on domains.

11) What is the difference between this feature and a Reseller Account?

This is very popular question, when it really is a very simple answer.

An Add-on domain is namely for personal use only and cannot, under any circumstances, be given or sold to any other individual or business for any type of hosting use. Add-on domains also are all managed within one control panel and cannot be used with pre-installed CGI-Scripts or the Fantastico panel.

A Reseller Account also gives the client (reseller) the privileges to create as many domains as they would like. However, unlike an addon domain, each domain will have it's very own client control panel, passwords, etc... and can be distributed to family, friends, clients, or businesses. This is namely effective for people who like increased management over their domains or would like to be able to give hosting accounts to others.
